Things to Consider Before Playing an Action Sport

Craig Middleton
It is always fun to join a sports team and be active, but you want to make sure that being an athlete is something you enjoy. There are many different aspects to playing a sport, and it is not for everyone, but you may be surprised how well you fit in. If you are considering a new hobby, here are a few things to remember before playing an action sport.

Are You a Team Player?

If you have no problem playing well with others than you have mastered the first step in being a team player. You have probably heard the saying, "There is no 'I' in team" a million times, but it is the truth. For your team to be as successful as possible, every piece of the puzzle has to be willing to put the bigger picture first.
There are plenty of amazing athletes, such as Usain Bolt or Serena Williams, that compete on an individual basis. Yet, there are also times where they have had to come together as a team working with their countries on stages like the Olympics.
Not to mention, even athletes who play single sports still have to be willing to work with a group of trainers and coaches if they want to continue improving their skills. Being apart of a group is a great feeling, but it does take some adjustments to be happy for other people's success if they are in trade of your own.

Uniforms

Uniforms are a huge part of playing a sport. Knee pads are part of a volleyball player's uniform to protect their knees from floor burns, and a catcher's pads are apart of his baseball ensemble to avoid any injury from wild pitches.
An athlete's attire may not be the most stylish thing, but there is a large number of customizations that could be made to have you and your team looking their best. Maybe you choose to add some fun novelty socks to the mix and jerseys to match! Sports don't have to be all about competition and winning; there is nothing wrong with having a little fun.

Injury

Not that you can't get hurt going down the stairs regularly, but there is a much higher risk of getting injured when playing action sports. The best way to prevent an accident is to make sure you are stretching correctly and taking care of your body, mouth guards and knee braces are worn for a reason.
Warming your body up before any physical exercise significantly reduces the risk of pulling a muscle or catching a cramp. You always want to make sure you are drinking plenty of water and fueling your body with the nutrients it needs to recover. Your muscles and joints also need regular rest to make sure you aren't susceptible to overuse issues.
There are times where there was nothing that could have been done to prevent an injury, but there are certainly ways to avoid them. Mostly, playing a sport and being active can be the best time of your life. You can meet life-long friends and learn some discipline along the way.

Take the Time to Consider

Whether you are a little league baseball player, NCAA power forward or NFL receiver, athletics has a lot to offer to your life. There is quite a bit of time, energy and effort involved with playing a sport, but the feeling of reaching a goal is worth every second.
Even if you only play in the backyard for fun, it is good for the soul to be active, and a little friendly competition never hurt anybody. If you are a bit nervous about investing your time into a sport and you are unsure if you will like it, give it a go.
